Iraq's official oil reserves at the end of 2017 were reported to be 20.1 billion metric tons (BP 2018). The ultimately recoverable oil resources are estimated to be 25.9 billion metric tons. There will come a time in the future when oil demand stops growing, but recent forecasts putting that date in 2023, five years from today, should be viewed with skepticism. As such, the Arctic is estimated to contain about 90 billion barrels of undiscovered oil, 17 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered gas and 44 billion barrels of natural gas liquids, making up, respectively, 16%, 30% and 26% of the world's individual undiscovered hydrocarbon resources.
